Flatiron Rock Trail: A Cozy Day in the Badlands

At Hundhaven, we’re always exploring new places to take our dogs — trails where they can roam, sniff, climb, and enjoy the outdoors as much as we do. Bend is full of great options, and one of our favorite easy day trips is the Flatiron Rock Trail in the Oregon Badlands Wilderness.

Just fifteen minutes east of Bend, this trail is perfect for a relaxed outing with your pups, especially on cool, overcast days when the desert feels calm and wide open.

Why Flatiron Rock Is Great for Dogs

  • Easy to moderate terrain — manageable for most dogs

  • Short loop option (~3.1 miles) makes it a good half-day adventure

  • Soft sandy sections that are gentle on paws

  • Open desert landscape where dogs can explore on leash without feeling cramped

  • Unique geology like lava ridges and rock formations that add interest for both dogs and humans

With temperatures around 50°F during our visit, it was the perfect weather for the dogs to stay cozy in their hoodies while still being comfortable on the trail.

Our Experience

We brought four pups, all layered up and ready for adventure. The trail winds through ancient junipers and across quiet stretches of high desert before reaching Flatiron Rock — a natural viewpoint where the dogs happily scrambled around and explored.

If you’re looking for a hike that’s close to Bend, easy to follow, and reliably dog-friendly, Flatiron Rock is a great choice.

Where to Go After Your Hike

If you want to pair your adventure with good food and a relaxed atmosphere afterward, we recommend Worthy Brewing in Bend. It’s conveniently located right on the way back into town from the Badlands, making it an easy and perfect post-hike stop.

They have outdoor seating, great service, and a laid-back vibe that fits perfectly after a trail day with your dogs. We ordered the chicken wings, the Brie salad, and a couple of Worthy IPAs — everything was excellent. It’s a warm, comfortable place to unwind after a cool morning on the trail.
